BRAMPTON — Downtown Brampton’s public spaces are set for a major transformation, with a giant wrap-around LED screen, redesigned amphitheatre, and new cultural landmarks included in a sweeping redevelopment plan.
The upgrades are part of the city’s Ken Whillans Square and Garden Square projects, with construction on Whillans Square scheduled to begin this fall.
Architecture firm gh3* was selected to lead the redesign, which will feature the Shimmer Stage in Whillans Square — a combination art piece, digital screen, performance stage, and overhead shade canopy. The city says the space will act as “a visual landmark and civic anchor,” supporting cultural expression, public gatherings, and year-round recreation.
In Garden Square, a suspended Rosette Ring LED screen will serve as a new civic focal point. Plans also include an updated amphitheatre terrace connecting directly to The Rose Theatre, creating a seamless cultural hub.
Designers have dubbed the revitalized spaces “The Flower Squares,” reimagining them as unified yet distinct destinations inspired by Brampton’s floral heritage. The plans emphasize sculptural architecture, symbolic motifs, and expressive landscaping to enhance both daily use and large-scale events.
The redesign follows two rounds of public consultation, including a city survey that drew about 200 responses.
Meanwhile, downtown Brampton is already undergoing significant change. A $22.5-million streetscaping project is currently underway, bringing new traffic lights, upgraded roads, and other infrastructure improvements.
The start date for the Garden Square upgrades will be determined as the city coordinates multiple downtown projects.
