The City of Brampton is inviting residents to take part in a series of cultural celebrations throughout May recognizing Polish Heritage Month, Guyanese Independence Day and Portuguese Heritage Month.
City officials say the events aim to highlight Brampton’s cultural diversity while creating opportunities for residents to connect through music, food, traditions and community gatherings.
Patrick Brown said the celebrations reflect the city’s multicultural identity and community spirit.
“These events celebrate cultural heritage while highlighting the diversity and strength of our communities,” Brown said. “Through shared experiences and cultural showcases, we continue to create opportunities for residents to connect, learn and reflect.”
Polish Heritage Month Celebration
The city, in partnership with the Canadian Polish Business Association, will host a Polish Heritage Month celebration featuring a community flag raising ceremony at Ken Whillans Square followed by a reception inside City Hall.
The event will include cultural performances and complimentary traditional Polish cuisine provided by EuroMAX Foods.
The celebration is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Brampton City Hall.
May is recognized nationally as Polish Heritage Month, honouring the history, traditions and contributions of Polish communities across Canada.
Guyanese Independence Day Celebration
Residents are also invited to celebrate Guyanese Independence Day on Saturday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Brampton City Hall.
The event is being organized in partnership with the West Indian Community Brampton and will feature cultural performances, youth artwork, fashion showcases and a children’s book display.
A community reception with food from a local restaurant will follow the flag raising ceremony.
Guyanese Independence Day, observed internationally on May 26, commemorates Guyana’s independence and celebrates the contributions and culture of the Guyanese community.
Portuguese Heritage Month and Lusofonia Festival
The city will also celebrate Portuguese Heritage Month with the return of the Lusofonia Festival, running from May 29 to May 31 at Gage Park.
Presented through the city’s Tourism Sponsorship Program, the festival will feature live entertainment, traditional Portuguese cuisine, cultural performances and a marketplace showcasing handmade goods.
A Portuguese Heritage Month community flag raising ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at Ken Whillans Square.
Portuguese Heritage Month is officially celebrated across Canada in June and recognizes the contributions and cultural traditions of Portuguese Canadians.
City officials encourage residents to participate in the celebrations and learn more about Brampton’s diverse communities through these events.
