Builders, designers, and homeowners in Brampton have just one week remaining to submit building permit applications under the current 2012 Ontario Building Code, before significant new regulations come into effect on April 1, 2025.
The Ontario Building Code, which governs minimum construction standards across the province, is undergoing its first major overhaul since 2012. The update includes more than 200 changes aimed at improving sustainability, safety, and efficiency in both residential and commercial development.
To ensure a smooth transition, the City of Brampton is offering a grace period for those with pending projects. Applications submitted on or before March 31, 2025, will still be reviewed under the current 2012 standards.
“This flexible approach helps prevent unnecessary delays and confusion, allowing projects to move forward smoothly,” said a city spokesperson. “By offering this extended transition period, the city aims to foster economic growth, enhance the development experience in Brampton, and support both safety and compliance.”
The new code is designed to meet the evolving needs of Ontario’s fast-growing construction industry by cutting red tape, supporting innovation, and encouraging environmentally responsible building practices.
