The City of Brampton proudly announced a significant investment of $29.8 million from the Ontario government today, aimed at supporting the development of 12,900 housing units and improving critical downtown infrastructure. This announcement, made in Brampton, included key provincial leaders such as Premier Doug Ford, Hon. Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure, Hon. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, and Hon. Graham McGregor, Associate Minister of Auto Theft and Bail Reform, alongside Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and members of the City Council.
The $29.8 million funding comes through Ontario’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, a program designed to address Brampton’s growing housing needs and support the City’s transformative Riverwalk project. This initiative aims to bolster the city’s infrastructure by enhancing flood mitigation systems and promoting accessible urban spaces in the downtown core.
“The investment is a clear demonstration of the strong collaboration between the City of Brampton and the Ontario government,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “This support will not only expedite housing development but also unlock the potential of our downtown area, advancing our Riverwalk initiative.”
Vital Housing and Infrastructure Enhancements
The newly secured funding will contribute to key downtown projects, including green spaces, community amenities, and expansion of commercial and institutional partnerships. By addressing infrastructure needs, the investment sets the stage for Brampton’s long-term growth, catering to the city’s rapidly expanding population.
The Riverwalk project, a focal point of this funding, will see critical drainage improvements that will allow for the construction of 12,900 new housing units. In addition, the Riverwalk will create 3.6 million square feet of new residential, commercial, and retail space, generating over 23,000 jobs and contributing $1.4 billion to the economy.
Ontario’s Commitment to Housing Development
Premier Doug Ford emphasized the province’s focus on accelerating housing construction: “With billions of dollars in investments in housing-enabling infrastructure, our government is helping get more shovels in the ground to keep the dream of homeownership alive.”
Minister Kinga Surma highlighted the importance of infrastructure investments: “By investing in drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities, we are enabling municipalities to build more homes, ensuring that families have access to housing that meets their needs.”
Brampton’s Riverwalk Vision
The Riverwalk project, central to downtown Brampton’s revitalization, will transform the Etobicoke Creek area into a dynamic urban space surrounded by parks, trails, and public amenities. By mitigating flood risks and lifting development restrictions, Riverwalk will foster housing and economic growth in the city’s core.
The City of Brampton remains committed to working with all levels of government to build a resilient and vibrant community. For more information on Brampton’s Riverwalk project, visit Brampton.ca/riverwalk.
