Brampton North MP Ruby Sahota has been appointed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, assuming the roles of Minister of Democratic Institutions and Minister Responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
The appointment comes amidst significant upheaval in the Liberal government, following the unexpected resignation of former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Freeland’s departure has fueled internal divisions within the Liberal caucus, with growing calls for Trudeau to step down.
Despite the political turbulence, Trudeau continues to press forward, even as NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has announced plans to withdraw his party’s support for the minority government. Singh intends to introduce a no-confidence motion when Parliament resumes in late January, potentially leading to a federal election as early as spring 2025.
Sahota’s Political Journey
Ruby Sahota, a long-time Brampton resident and alumna of Central Peel Secondary School, was first elected to Parliament in 2015. Since then, she has been re-elected in two subsequent elections, gaining recognition for her work as Chief Government Whip and her contributions on various government committees.
In her new cabinet role, Sahota is expected to address pressing democratic and economic challenges, particularly in Southern Ontario, where the Federal Economic Development Agency plays a critical role. She is set to begin her duties immediately.
As the Liberal government navigates mounting political challenges, Sahota’s appointment signals Trudeau’s continued effort to stabilize his administration and strengthen regional representation in the federal cabinet.
