Brampton Hindu Temple Protests: Police Charge 35-Year-Old in Ongoing Investigation

Peel Regional Police have arrested a 35-year-old Brampton resident, charging him with assault with a weapon in connection with recent violent protests at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, Ontario. This arrest follows earlier demonstrations that escalated into physical confrontations between supporters of the Khalistan movement and Hindu community members. The protests began on Sunday, November 3, 2024, during a visit by Indian consular officials to the temple and subsequently spread to two locations in Mississauga.

In addition to this latest arrest, four individuals were previously detained, including a 57-year-old Toronto man charged with public incitement of hatred. A Peel Regional Police officer was also suspended after being observed participating in the demonstrations while off duty.

Videos circulating on social media depict altercations involving fistfights and individuals striking each other with poles on the temple grounds. Authorities are reviewing these recordings to identify and prosecute those responsible for unlawful activities during the protests.

The incidents have drawn condemnation from political leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both denouncing the violence and emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Peel Regional Police continue to investigate the events and urge the public to report any information related to the incidents.
