Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Receives Over $100,000 for Cancer Prevention and Infrastructure Upgrades

Investment Enhances Safety Measures at Fire Station 205 in Heart Lake

The Ontario government has allocated $106,995 to Brampton Fire and Emergency Services as part of a province-wide initiative to support cancer prevention among firefighters. This funding will be directed towards acquiring specialized equipment and implementing critical infrastructure upgrades, with a focus on Fire Station 205 in the Heart Lake community.

Firefighters face heightened risks of cancer due to exposure to hazardous chemicals encountered during emergency responses. The allocated funds aim to mitigate these risks by providing resources for:

  • Advanced Decontamination Equipment: Tools and systems designed to effectively remove toxic residues from gear and apparatus.
  • Infrastructure Enhancements: Upgrades to station facilities to minimize contamination and ensure a safer working environment.

These measures align with Ontario’s commitment to safeguarding the health of its firefighters. The Fire Protection Grant, totaling $30 million, is the first of its kind in the province, supporting 374 municipal fire departments in their cancer prevention efforts.

Graham McGregor, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brampton North, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “This funding is crucial in ensuring that our firefighters have the necessary tools and facilities to protect themselves as they protect our community.”

Denny Keenan, Fire Chief of Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, expressed gratitude for the support, noting, “The health and safety of our firefighters are paramount. This investment enables us to implement essential upgrades at Fire Station 205, enhancing our cancer prevention initiatives.”

The City of Brampton remains dedicated to providing its emergency services personnel with the resources needed to perform their duties safely and effectively. This funding represents a significant step towards ensuring the long-term health and well-being of Brampton’s firefighters.
