Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, Recognizes Local Heroes with Prestigious Award
Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, proudly presented the King Charles III Coronation Medals to five distinguished community leaders in recognition of their exceptional contributions to Brampton and Canada. The medals, issued by the Government of Canada to commemorate His Majesty King Charles III’s Ascension to the Throne, were awarded to Dr. Anurag Gupta, Farooq Malik, Arshad Bhatti, Gian Paul, and Abdul Rashid during a heartfelt ceremony in Brampton.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal, crafted by the Royal Canadian Mint, celebrates the historic coronation of His Majesty on May 6, 2023. This national honour is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant impacts in their communities, provinces, or the country at large. With only 30,000 medals distributed across Canada—including 4,000 reserved for the Canadian Armed Forces—this recognition underscores the remarkable dedication of its recipients.

Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, nominated these leaders for their tireless efforts to uplift the community. “It’s an honour to celebrate the outstanding contributions of Dr. Anurag Gupta, Farooq Malik, Arshad Bhatti, Gian Paul, Afshaq Khan and Abdul Rashid,” said Ali. “These individuals embody the spirit of service and leadership that strengthens Brampton and inspires us all. Their work reflects the values His Majesty King Charles III champions—community, resilience, and progress.”
Dr. Anurag Gupta, a respected physician, has been a cornerstone of Brampton’s healthcare community, providing compassionate care and advocating for improved medical services. Farooq Malik, a dedicated philanthropist, has spearheaded initiatives to support local families and youth programs. Abdul Rashid, a long-time advocate for cultural diversity, has bridged communities through education and outreach.

Gian Paul, a powerhouse in community leadership, serves as Chairperson of the Flower City Friends Club (FCFC), President of the Mukti Foundation, Vice President of the PSB Seniors Club, and Director of the Indo-Canadian Golf Association. Through these roles, Paul has championed numerous initiatives: organizing cultural events that foster unity through FCFC, supporting mental health and addiction recovery programs via the Mukti Foundation, enhancing the quality of life for seniors at PSB Seniors Club, and promoting sportsmanship and networking through golf tournaments. “Receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal is a humbling moment for me,” Paul said. “It’s not just an honour for me personally, but a testament to the collective efforts of our community in Brampton. I’m grateful to MP Shafqat Ali for this nomination and remain committed to serving the people who make this city so special.”

Arshad Bhatti, a veteran journalist and advocate for social justice, brings over 20 years of experience in radio and TV broadcasting in Canada. Known for his adaptability to emerging technologies in journalism, Bhatti has educated and informed communities while amplifying underrepresented voices. “I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal,” Bhatti said. “After more than two decades in broadcasting, I’m still learning and embracing new challenges in this field. This recognition is an incredible honour, and I’m truly grateful to the Government of Canada and MP Shafqat Ali for this acknowledgment.’ His work has consistently bridged gaps, fostering dialogue on issues like equity and community development in Brampton.

The ceremony, attended by local dignitaries and residents, highlighted the diverse contributions of these leaders—from healthcare and philanthropy to cultural unity and social equity. Each recipient received a medal featuring the effigy of King Charles III, symbolizing their role in shaping a stronger Canada.
The Office of Shafqat Ali encourages the public to join in celebrating these remarkable individuals whose leadership continues to leave a lasting legacy in Brampton and beyond.
