Bollywood Star Kangana Ranaut: From Box Office Queen to a Decade Without Hits, Facing a 93% Loss in Revenue

Once hailed as the reigning Queen of Bollywood, Kangana Ranaut’s illustrious box office run has been eclipsed by a decade-long dry spell. Despite her undeniable talent and accolades, including multiple National Awards, Kangana’s recent films have struggled to make a mark, with her latest release, Emergency, showing no signs of reversing the trend.

Between 2011 and 2015, Kangana Ranaut was a powerhouse at the box office, breaking records with female-led films like Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. These films not only garnered critical acclaim but also set benchmarks for commercial success, making Kangana the first female actor to repeatedly break the record for highest-grossing female-led Bollywood films.

This period marked the zenith of her career, with Tanu Weds Manu Returns becoming one of Bollywood’s most beloved hits. At just 28 years old, Kangana seemed poised for greater heights.

However, the last 10 years have been marked by box office setbacks. Following Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Kangana starred in 11 films, none of which became clean hits. Her 2019 historical drama Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi came close, earning ₹92 crore nett in India and ₹133 crore worldwide, but its high production costs meant it only broke even.

The post-pandemic period has been particularly challenging. Films like Tejas, Dhaakad, and Thalaivi not only failed but were labeled box office disasters. Combined, these three films had a budget of ₹255 crore but earned a mere ₹17 crore, translating to a staggering 93% loss in revenue. Dhaakad, with an ₹85-crore budget, earned just ₹3 crore globally, making it the biggest flop of her career.

Kangana’s Emergency, a film she directed and starred in, was touted as her magnum opus. With a subject rooted in Indian history and complete creative control, the film was expected to revive her career. However, despite its ₹60-crore budget, Emergency is struggling to reach ₹15 crore in its opening week and is unlikely to recover its costs.

Kangana’s decline at the box office is attributed to a mix of factors:

  • Choice of Projects: Many of her films were either poorly marketed or failed to resonate with audiences.
  • Controversies: Kangana’s outspoken nature and frequent feuds have overshadowed her professional achievements.
  • Changing Audience Preferences: Bollywood’s landscape has shifted, with audiences gravitating towards fresh content and relatable storytelling.
  • Kangana remains a formidable actor with undeniable talent. However, her recent struggles highlight the unpredictable nature of the film industry. With Emergency unlikely to reverse her fortunes, it remains to be seen if Kangana can recapture the box office magic of her prime.

For now, Bollywood’s once-undisputed Queen finds herself at a crossroads, searching for a way to reignite her connection with audiences and reclaim her place at the top.
