Region of Peel Begins Household Battery Pickup Starting April 20
Residents across Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon will soon have an easy and safe way to dispose of used household batteries, as the Region of Peel launches its annual curbside battery collection program starting April 20.
The initiative allows households to place both single-use and rechargeable batteries at the curb on their scheduled collection day, making recycling more convenient while helping prevent hazardous waste from ending up in landfills or garbage trucks.
To participate, residents are asked to place batteries in a transparent sealed bag. Safety steps are especially important: metal contacts on rechargeable batteries and 9-volt batteries should be taped, while button-cell batteries should also be taped to reduce the risk of sparks or fires during handling and transport.
On pickup day, the sealed bag should be placed on top of a closed green bin or beside the recycling containers if no green bin is available. Officials are reminding residents not to place batteries in regular garbage, recycling, or organics bins, as damaged or loose batteries can create serious fire risks inside trucks and waste processing facilities.
The program reflects a growing push toward safer waste management and environmental responsibility. Batteries contain materials that can be recovered and reused, but when disposed of improperly, they can also release harmful substances or trigger dangerous incidents.
For residents who miss the curbside collection, year-round drop-off options remain available through battery recycling programs and local community recycling centres.
As spring cleanup season begins, this simple program gives Peel households a practical chance to protect the environment, improve safety, and keep hazardous waste out of the regular waste stream—one battery at a time.
