Avian Influenza Resurfaces in Brampton: Important Information for Residents

Avian influenza has resurfaced in Brampton, marking a recurrence after the virus claimed the lives of hundreds of Canadian geese in Peel Region last year.

According to an official statement released by the city, infected waterfowl have been detected in various areas of Brampton, notably at the intersection of Williams Parkway and Elbern Markell Drive, as well as in the vicinity of Daviselm Drive and Cedar Lake Crescent.

Last March, infected Canadian geese were found at Professor’s Lake and Duncan Valley Foster South. By April, Brampton Animal Services had recorded over 200 deceased geese throughout the city.

While the likelihood of human transmission remains minimal, the city is providing residents and pet owners with precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks.

Health officials are urging residents to refrain from interacting with or feeding waterfowl and to prevent pets from coming into contact with fecal matter. Pet cats and birds should be kept indoors, and dogs should be leashed when in public areas. Additionally, the city recommends the removal of bird feeders or regular cleaning with soap and water to prevent bacterial or viral contamination.

Despite the low risk to public health, all areas where infected waterfowl have been detected remain accessible to the public. The city has installed signage at identified hotspots and will continue monitoring the situation, adding more signage if necessary.

Residents are encouraged to report any incidents involving deceased waterfowl by contacting 311. Further information about avian flu can be found on the city’s website at www.brampton.ca.
