Renowned musician AR Rahman, celebrated for his stellar compositions, has lent his talents to Imtiaz Ali’s latest venture, the biographical drama “Amar Singh Chamkila.” Scheduled for release on April 12, 2024, this film features Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in leading roles, portraying the iconic Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila.
In a recent conversation with News18, Rahman offered insights into the film’s musical landscape, describing it as “very naughty.” Explaining further, he elaborated, “It is a very naughty picture; we had to find the place for music. If you look at it, Chamkila is a composer, lyricist, and singer. The question I asked was, ‘Why am I needed?’ I said, ‘Oh! We can do this part. We can make it like a musical where everybody sings about Chamkila, blaming him for the good or the bad.’ That’s the director’s point of view, and that was exciting.”
Reflecting on his collaboration with Imtiaz Ali, Rahman expressed admiration for the director’s amiable demeanor and the effortless synergy they share. “I love working with Imtiaz. He is very friendly. You know, with certain people, work happens [just] like that, and there’s no pressure. With him, there’s never been pressure at all,” he remarked, highlighting the creative freedom fostered by their partnership.
Meanwhile, Parineeti Chopra, who plays a pivotal role in the film, revealed her learning experience alongside Diljit Dosanjh. Despite her initial confidence in her Punjabi skills, Chopra found herself humbled by Dosanjh’s mastery of the language and his dedication to authenticity in portraying the characters. “I was a student in front of Diljit. I used to check my diction with Diljit. (That) I am pronouncing the word correctly or not, or how should I do it? The biggest challenge for us was that we should not sing like us. We had to try to sing like Amarjot and Chamkila,” she shared.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, “Amar Singh Chamkila” promises to narrate the captivating tale of the legendary pop duo Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, whose songs captivated audiences in the 80s. As anticipation mounts for its release on April 12, 2024, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, audiences eagerly await the cinematic journey into the lives of these iconic musicians.
