Americans Increasingly Eye Canada as Political and Global Uncertainty Fuels Interest in Relocation

A growing number of Americans appear to be exploring the possibility of moving north of the border, as a leading Canadian real estate company reports significant increases in website traffic originating from the United States throughout the first half of 2026.

According to Royal LePage, visits from U.S.-based users to its consumer real estate portal have surged repeatedly this year, often coinciding with periods of heightened political, economic, and geopolitical uncertainty. The company says the trend reflects renewed American interest in Canada as a potential destination for relocation and long-term stability.

Phil Soper, President and CEO of Royal LePage, noted that the opening months of 2026 have been dominated by a steady stream of unsettling headlines, including international conflicts, economic volatility, and growing political and social tensions in the United States. During such periods, many Americans revisit the idea of relocating to Canada in search of a more stable environment.

The first major spike in website traffic from the United States occurred in mid-January, when visits to the Royal LePage website rose dramatically compared with both the previous week and the same period a year earlier. The company observed another record-setting surge during the second week of April as international tensions surrounding developments in the Middle East intensified.

Interest remained elevated in the weeks that followed, with additional increases recorded during periods marked by major legal and political debates in the United States. According to Royal LePage, these recurring spikes suggest that a growing number of Americans are actively researching Canadian housing markets and evaluating the feasibility of a move.

Soper believes Canada continues to hold strong appeal for Americans because of its cultural similarities, geographic proximity, and shared language. He added that Canada’s reputation for political stability, publicly funded healthcare system, and high quality of life makes it an attractive option during times of uncertainty.

The company also noted that recent changes to Canada’s citizenship-by-descent regulations have generated additional interest among Americans seeking to determine whether they may qualify for Canadian citizenship through family connections.

Royal LePage says this pattern is not new. Similar increases in American traffic to Canadian real estate websites were observed during key political moments in recent years, including the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election and the period following the election results. The company reports that major political developments have repeatedly sparked heightened curiosity about life in Canada.

While increased website traffic does not necessarily translate into immediate home purchases or permanent relocation, the trend highlights Canada’s continuing reputation as a desirable destination for those seeking stability, opportunity, and a high standard of living during uncertain times.
