The federal government has committed a $6 million investment to help establish a dedicated space at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) for Sikh arts, culture, and heritage. This significant announcement was made as part of the 2024 federal budget, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and preserving the diverse cultural fabric of Canada.
The investment will support the creation of the Global Sikh Art & Culture Gallery, a groundbreaking project that will expand the ROM’s existing South Asian galleries. This new gallery will cover 2,300 square feet and will feature an extensive collection of Sikh art, historical objects, and contemporary works, alongside a range of public programs such as talks, performances, and gallery tours. The project is part of the ROM’s broader initiative to enhance its public spaces and make cultural exhibits more accessible to diverse communities.
At a recent press conference held in Brampton East, the Sikh Arts & Culture Foundation, along with local media, provided updates on the progress of this project. The foundation has been instrumental in raising additional funds for the gallery, which has already secured $16.6 million through community contributions. The gallery is anticipated to be a significant cultural asset, not only for the Sikh community in Canada but also for visitors from around the world.
Speaking at the event, a spokesperson from the Sikh Arts & Culture Foundation emphasized the importance of this gallery, stating, “For more than a century, the Sikh community in Canada has played a vital role in building the country we have today. This dedicated exhibit will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Sikh community through an impressive display of arts and culture, ensuring that these stories are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that the contributions of Sikh Canadians are integral to the broader Canadian narrative. He stated, “The investments in Budget 2024 will help Sikh Canadians share their own stories, create their own spaces, and preserve their own heritage – because diversity is our greatest strength.”
The Sikh Art & Culture Gallery at the ROM is expected to open in the coming years, contributing to a deeper understanding of Sikh history and its impact on Canadian society.
