426 Vehicles Stolen in 31 Days: Alarming Theft Rates Persist in Mississauga and Brampton

The scourge of vehicle thefts in Mississauga and Brampton continues unabated, with over 400 vehicles reported stolen in just 31 days. The persistent issue has left residents on edge and law enforcement grappling with solutions.

Staggering Numbers

From October 30 to November 30, Peel Regional Police reported a total of 426 vehicle thefts across the two cities—225 in Mississauga and 201 in Brampton. This equates to an average of more than 13 vehicles stolen per day.

Of the stolen vehicles:

  • 303 were cars
  • 106 were trucks
  • 8 were motorcycles
  • 9 fell under other categories

While eight cases have been solved, 412 remain under investigation, and six have been classified as unsolved.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid Grim Statistics

Despite the high numbers, there is a silver lining: this month’s thefts reflect a 25% decrease compared to the 568 incidents recorded in August.

Theft Hot Spots

Four areas emerged as hot spots for vehicle thefts, with nine or more reported incidents:

  • Airport Road – 9 occurrences
  • City Centre Drive – 12 occurrences
  • Courtney Park – 10 occurrences
  • Great Lakes Drive – 17 occurrences

These areas are particularly vulnerable, prompting police and community leaders to urge residents to exercise heightened caution.

High-Profile Incidents

Several notable vehicle theft cases have drawn public attention, including:

  • The theft of 77 vehicles by an organized group operating near Toronto Pearson Airport.

Protecting Your Vehicle

Peel Regional Police have issued tips to help residents safeguard their vehicles:

  • Park in a locked garage whenever possible, as many vehicles are stolen directly from driveways.
  • Use a steering wheel lock, which serves as both a deterrent and a protective measure.
  • Install a data port lock, a simple device that prevents thieves from reprogramming your vehicle’s keys.
  • Invest in a quality video surveillance system, ensuring cameras are properly placed for both day and night monitoring.

The Bigger Picture

As vehicle theft rates remain a pressing issue, authorities continue to investigate and implement measures to deter criminal activity. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to Peel Regional Police.
