A 22-year-old Indian national identified as Shivam has pleaded guilty in the United States for his role in a human smuggling operation that allegedly transported migrants from Canada into United States through northern New York.
According to the United States Department of Justice, the operation ran between October 2024 and June 2025.
How the Smuggling Network Operated
U.S. prosecutors allege Shivam coordinated drivers who picked up migrants near the Canada-U.S. border and transported them to:
- stash houses in northern New York
- hotels in Plattsburgh
Court documents state that drivers were allegedly paid $100 per person smuggled.
Authorities said many of those transported were Indian nationals, while others were from the United Kingdom.
January 2025 Border Incident
Investigators highlighted a January 25, 2025 incident where:
- Two vehicles attempted to evade United States Border Patrol officers near the border
- One vehicle crashed after leaving the road
- Another was stopped in Mooers, New York
- A total of 12 migrants were found inside the vehicles
Officials allege Shivam directed the operation involving those individuals.
Charges and Possible Sentence
Shivam pleaded guilty to:
- One count of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling
- Three counts of alien smuggling for financial gain
He now faces:
- A mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years
- A maximum sentence of 15 years in prison
Sentencing is scheduled for September 2026.
Broader Border Security Concerns
The case comes amid increased scrutiny of illegal migration and organized smuggling operations along parts of the Canada-U.S. border, particularly in regions near:
- New York
- Quebec
- Ontario
Authorities on both sides of the border have reported growing activity involving human smuggling networks using remote crossings and temporary transportation hubs.
