Family Day 2025: What’s Open and Closed Across Canada

Family Day falls on Monday, February 17 this year, bringing a statutory holiday to several provinces. While not a federal holiday, Family Day is officially recognized in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, leading to widespread closures of businesses, schools, and government offices.

Other provinces also mark the third Monday in February with their own statutory holidays. Manitoba observes Louis Riel Day, Nova Scotia celebrates Heritage Day, and Prince Edward Island has Islander Day.

With many Canadians making plans for the long weekend, here’s a look at what will be open and closed across the country on Monday.

Government Offices

  • Provincial government offices will be closed in provinces that recognize Family Day or equivalent holidays. Some essential services, such as highway maintenance, will remain operational.
  • Federal government offices, including Passport Canada and Service Canada, will remain open as these holidays are provincial, not federal.

Schools

Elementary and secondary schools will be closed in provinces where Family Day, Louis Riel Day, Heritage Day, or Islander Day is observed.

Banks

Most bank branches will be closed in provinces with statutory holidays, though online banking and ATMs will remain available.

Retail and Grocery Stores

  • Many major grocery chains, including Loblaws, FreshCo, and Sobeys, will be closed.
  • Some Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall locations will remain open but may operate on reduced hours.
  • Malls and major retailers will be closed in most provinces observing the holiday. However, gas stations and convenience stores like 7-Eleven will remain open.

Canada Post

Mail collection and delivery will continue as usual, and corporate post offices will be open. However, post offices located within private businesses will follow the host retailer’s hours.

City Services

  • Municipal offices will be closed in provinces observing the holiday.
  • Garbage and recycling collection may be delayed in some areas.
  • Libraries will generally be closed.
  • Public recreational facilities, such as skating rinks and swimming pools, may be open with adjusted hours. Check your city’s website for details.

Public Transit

Most transit systems will run on holiday schedules where Family Day and similar holidays are recognized. Riders should check their local transit websites for updates.

Entertainment and Tourist Attractions

Many popular attractions will remain open for Family Day celebrations. Some examples include:

  • New Brunswick: Provincial parks like Mount Carleton, Sugarloaf, and Mactaquac will offer winter activities, including tobogganing, skating, and skiing.
  • Ontario: The Toronto Zoo will be open, featuring special animal programs and feedings.
  • British Columbia: Grouse Mountain in Vancouver will offer free admission and lift tickets to children under 12 from Feb. 15 to 17, with activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and a treehouse adventure.
  • Saskatchewan: The Saskatchewan Science Centre in Regina will host immersive exhibits, including wildlife encounters and hands-on science activities.

For the most up-to-date information, it’s best to check with local businesses and attractions before heading out. Whether staying indoors or exploring winter activities, Canadians across the country have plenty of ways to enjoy the long weekend.
