70 Robberies, 31 Involving Guns, Reported in Mississauga and Brampton Last Month

Mississauga and Brampton have seen a concerning surge in robberies over the past month, with 70 incidents reported between January 15 and February 15, according to Peel Regional Police. Of these, 31 involved firearms, 20 involved other weapons, and 19 were classified as “other” by authorities.

The data reveals a nearly equal distribution of crimes between the two cities, with Mississauga recording 34 robberies and Brampton 36. As of February 15, police have resolved 21 cases, while 49 remain under investigation.

The police identified several high-risk areas, including Dundas Street (5 incidents), Eglinton Avenue (3 incidents), Lakeshore Road (3 incidents), Peel Centre Drive (3 incidents), and Steeles Avenue (3 incidents).

Among the notable cases this month:

  • A Brampton teen was charged following an armed home invasion and assault.
  • Two Brampton teens faced charges for gunpoint robberies and a carjacking.
  • A jewelry store in Erin Mills Town Centre, Mississauga, was robbed for the third time.

While the police data does not specify the number of arrests or injuries, authorities are urging residents and businesses to take proactive measures to protect themselves.

To reduce the risk of robberies, police recommend:

  1. Installing and maintaining functional surveillance systems.
  2. Ensuring proper indoor and outdoor lighting.
  3. Providing staff with robbery prevention training.
  4. Minimizing cash on hand through frequent cash drops.
  5. Using low shelving and strategic placement to improve visibility.
  6. Removing excessive window signage or clutter to maintain clear lines of sight.
