Elderly Patient Defrauded of Nearly $1M: Newmarket Couple Charged

York Regional Police have arrested and charged a married couple, both health-care workers, in connection with the alleged theft of nearly $1 million from an elderly patient in Newmarket, Ontario. The shocking case has raised concerns about financial abuse of vulnerable individuals, and authorities believe there may be more victims.

The investigation began after the victim reported in August 2024 that a large sum of money had been withdrawn from her bank account without her authorization. Police quickly identified the suspects as Juvie Maputol, 38, and Lloyd Maputol, 37, both residents of Richmond Hill.

According to police, Juvie Maputol, who worked as a personal support worker, had access to the elderly patient and allegedly stole banking information, which was then used to withdraw significant sums of money from multiple financial institutions. Lloyd Maputol, a registered nurse working in Newmarket, is also accused of being involved in the fraudulent scheme.

Authorities confirmed that the accused are married and that Juvie was directly responsible for the victim’s care before the fraud was uncovered.

Following their arrest, both individuals have been charged with multiple financial crimes, including fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, and money laundering.

York Regional Police have released photos of the accused, urging any additional victims to come forward.

“Investigators are releasing their photos as they believe there may be more victims,” the police statement read.

Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information about this case or other potential fraud victims to contact the #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7141, or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the financial risks faced by vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, and underscores the importance of vigilance when entrusting caregivers with personal and financial matters. York Regional Police remain committed to holding those who exploit vulnerable individuals accountable and ensuring justice for victims of fraud.
