Algoma University Board of Governors Welcomes New Members, Strengthens Financial Policy

Algoma University’s Board of Governors convened its first meeting of the year on Monday, underscoring its commitment to leadership, governance, and financial sustainability. The meeting marked the appointment of two new external governors, Margaret Mah and Kate Lamb, as well as the approval of updates to the University’s Reserve Management Policy.

The Governance Committee recommended the appointment of Mah and Lamb, who will serve from January 27, 2025, to June 30, 2027.

  • Margaret Mah brings extensive experience as the Retired Director of Business and Administration within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
  • Kate Lamb is currently the Chief Operating Officer at the Law Society of Ontario, bringing significant expertise in governance and operational strategy.

Their addition strengthens Algoma University’s commitment to inclusive, effective leadership, ensuring continued progress in strategic planning and institutional growth.

In alignment with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities’ Financial Accountability Framework, the Board approved key revisions to the Reserve Management Policy, increasing the operating reserve requirement from 30 to 90 days.

“This policy update enhances Algoma University’s ability to plan strategically and navigate financial challenges, reinforcing our dedication to transparency and long-term success,” said Rob Battisti, Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Risk and Finance Committee.

The Board meeting also provided updates on major institutional projects, including:

  • The Makwa Waakaa’igan Centre of Cultural Excellence, a key initiative fostering Indigenous cultural engagement.
  • Expansion of science and research facilities, enhancing learning opportunities for students and faculty.

These projects reflect Algoma University’s dedication to academic excellence and community impact, further strengthening its role as a leader in post-secondary education.
