Mississauga is set to benefit from significant federal funding aimed at boosting affordable housing development and modernizing public transit. Today, the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business and MP for Mississauga-Streetsville, and Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish announced federal support through the Housing Accelerator Fund and transit funding initiatives.
Mississauga has received a second installment of more than $28.2 million from the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) to support the City’s housing incentives, as outlined in the Mayor’s Housing Task Force recommendations. This funding will:
- Offset shortfalls from development charge reductions for 2,700 shovel-ready market condo units.
- Provide discretionary grants under the City’s Affordable Rental Housing CIP to assist in constructing 400 new affordable and below-market rental apartments.
The third installment of HAF will be allocated for similar purposes, with the City also seeking additional provincial support through the Building Faster Fund.
Starting in 2026, Mississauga will receive over $112 million in federal transit funding over ten years through the Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF). This funding includes:
- Baseline Funding Stream: Supports long-term planning and enhancements to Mississauga’s public transit and active transportation infrastructure.
- Zero-Emission Transit Fund: Up to $10.9 million will be invested in purchasing 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses and installing fueling equipment at the Malton transit facility, making Mississauga the first municipality in Ontario to pilot hydrogen fuel cell buses.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish: “The federal investments in housing and transit announced today are a big step forward for Mississauga. These initiatives will help make life more affordable, make public transit more reliable, and strengthen our city for everyone who calls Mississauga home.”
Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith: “Every Canadian deserves to live in an affordable, sustainable community near quality public transit. Today’s announcements will make a big difference, but our work here isn’t done.”
Minister Rechie Valdez: “Our government is making historic investments in Mississauga to connect housing, transit, and sustainability. These investments will reduce commute times, create vibrant communities, and make housing more accessible.”
These initiatives mark a significant step in improving Mississauga’s infrastructure, ensuring that more residents have access to affordable housing and sustainable transportation options.
