A Race on a Razor’s Edge: Harris, Trump Deadlocked at 47%

The CNN poll shows a tight presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, with both candidates tied at 47% among likely voters as the final days of the campaign approach. This deadlock reflects a stable trend observed in recent months, with minor fluctuations within the poll’s margin of error. The poll was conducted by SSRS from October 20 to 23, 2024, after early and absentee voting began across the country.

The poll reveals that most likely voters have firmly decided on their choice, with only 2% remaining undecided. Harris has capitalized on early voting, leading 61% to 36% among voters who have already cast their ballots. Meanwhile, Trump holds a narrow lead among those yet to vote, at 50% to 44%.

The nation’s mood is largely pessimistic, with 49% of voters saying they are financially worse off than a year ago and only 16% reporting improvement. This sentiment is reflected in President Biden’s low approval rating, which stands at 36%. Despite the economic concerns and Biden’s unpopularity, Harris has managed to hold her ground, securing some support even from those who disapprove of Biden’s performance.

The poll indicates that Harris and Trump have similar favorability ratings, with both receiving more unfavorable than favorable views. Trump’s favorability is at 41% compared to 54% unfavorable, while Harris’ ratings are slightly worse, at 41% favorable to 52% unfavorable. In terms of key issues, Harris leads on abortion rights and protecting democracy, while Trump is preferred on the economy, immigration, and foreign policy.

Both candidates show clear strengths among certain voter demographics. Harris leads among women, younger voters, and voters of color, including a commanding advantage with Black and Hispanic voters. Trump, however, holds a lead with men, White voters, and rural voters. Notably, suburban voters lean towards Harris, driven largely by suburban women, while Trump is favored by suburban men.

The poll also highlights the candidates’ contrasting appeals. More voters perceive Harris as caring about people like them, being honest, and putting the country’s interests above her own. However, Trump is viewed as more capable of delivering the change the country needs. Voters who distrust both candidates significantly lean towards Trump, which could be a pivotal factor in this tight race.

Ultimately, this final CNN poll underscores the competitive nature of the 2024 election, with minimal room for undecided voters and a close contest likely to hinge on voter turnout and last-minute shifts in key demographics.
