Brampton neighbourhood celebrates Unity in Diversity with food, Gidha, games, friendship and stronger neighbourhood connections
BRAMPTON, ON — August 29, 2026 — More than 250 residents gathered in the Southlake Boulevard–Showboat Crescent area of Brampton for the 3rd Annual Street Party BBQ organized by Flower City Friends Club Neighbourhood Association, celebrating friendship, multiculturalism and community togetherness.
Children, youth, adults and seniors, along with members of social and cultural organizations, participated enthusiastically. Residents from Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Pakistani and other cultural communities came together, making the celebration a true reflection of Brampton’s “Unity in Diversity.”
The Street Party was not only about enjoying good food and entertainment. Its larger purpose was to provide an opportunity for residents to meet their neighbours, know and understand each other better, build friendships and create a closer and more caring neighbourhood.
The event was attended by Charmaine Williams, MPP; Ruby Sahota, MP; Amandeep Sodhi, MP; Regional Councillor Rowena Santos; and Regional Councillor Paul Vicente, who joined residents in celebrating the strong community spirit.
In his opening remarks, Gian Paul, Chairperson of Flower City Friends Club Neighbourhood Association, emphasized the importance of such gatherings.
“When neighbours meet, share food, have fun together and learn about each other’s cultures, friendships grow and communities become stronger. More than 250 people came together today not as different communities, but as one community. The real purpose of our Street Party is to know our neighbours better and develop understanding, respect and lasting friendships.”
MPP Charmaine Williams praised the gathering as a reflection of Brampton’s strength, with families and seniors from diverse backgrounds coming together with friendship and respect.
MP Ruby Sahota highlighted Brampton’s multicultural character and the importance of creating opportunities for residents to connect, while MP Amandeep Sodhi emphasized that strong communities are built when neighbours know, understand and support one another.
Regional Councillor Rowena Santos recognized the important role neighbourhood associations play in creating a sense of belonging, while Regional Councillor Paul Vicente praised the tremendous participation and the spirit of neighbours connecting with neighbours.
People Against Littering Joins the Celebration
Bill Godfrey, President of People Against Littering (P.A.L.), also participated and highlighted the connection between community pride and caring for neighbourhoods.
“A strong community is one where people care not only about each other, but also about the neighbourhood they share. Keeping our streets, parks and public spaces clean is a responsibility we all share.”
Godfrey congratulated Flower City Friends Club and its volunteers for bringing together people from different cultures and generations and promoting a strong sense of community belonging.
Gidha, Games, Laughter and Lots of Fun
The Street Party was filled with fun, laughter, music, dancing and entertainment throughout the afternoon. The lively Gidha performances added Punjabi cultural colour and energy to the celebration, with enthusiastic participation creating a festive atmosphere.
Kids’ games and special games for women were among the popular attractions. Children enjoyed the opportunity to play and make new friends, while the women’s games brought laughter, friendly competition and enthusiastic participation.
The games and activities were organized by Anuja Kabuli, Joyti Dadiala and Jessica, whose efforts helped make the afternoon enjoyable for residents of all ages.
The entertainment provided another important opportunity for neighbours to interact informally. Families who may have seen one another in the neighbourhood but never had the opportunity to talk were able to meet, introduce themselves and develop new connections.
Good Food Brings Neighbours Together
Food was at the heart of the celebration. The BBQ section, managed by Kamal, Raj and Major Kabuli, with the support of volunteers, served delicious food throughout the afternoon.
A major attraction was the live South Indian food station by Udupi Dosa, serving freshly prepared dosa, idli and vada. The live station was extremely popular and added another cultural flavour to the event, perfectly complementing its theme of diversity.
The combination of BBQ and South Indian cuisine reflected the multicultural spirit of the gathering and demonstrated how sharing food can be one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways of bringing people together.
Jaswinder Daind Praises Community Participation
Jaswinder Daind praised the overwhelming participation and the atmosphere of friendship:
“Seeing children, young people, adults and seniors from different backgrounds eating, dancing, playing games and enjoying themselves together showed the true spirit of our community. Such events help us know our neighbours better, create friendships and bring families closer.”
First-Time Participant Impressed
Virinder Lamba, attending the Street Party for the first time, said the experience left a strong impression on him.
“I was very impressed by the turnout, organization and warm atmosphere. There was good food, Gidha, games, laughter and entertainment, but what impressed me most was the togetherness. People from different cultures were meeting, talking and enjoying themselves as one community. It was a wonderful example of unity and brotherhood.”
He also appreciated the dedication of the organizers and volunteers and said he looked forward to participating again next year.
Volunteers Make It Possible
The success of the event was made possible by numerous volunteers and community members who contributed their time and energy to food preparation, BBQ stations, games, entertainment, setup, serving, coordination and cleanup.
Concluding the celebration, Gian Paul thanked the elected representatives, guests, residents, organizers and volunteers for making the third annual Street Party another memorable success.
“The success belongs to our residents and volunteers. Our message is simple — know your neighbours, understand each other, respect each other and celebrate together. We may come from different cultures and backgrounds, but we are one community. Thank you to everyone, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.”
The 3rd Annual Flower City Friends Club Street Party BBQ demonstrated once again that a neighbourhood becomes stronger when people meet, eat, laugh, dance and celebrate together — turning diversity into friendship and neighbours into a community.
