Montreal, July 23: Canada has lost one of its greatest musical talents with the passing of celebrated jazz pianist Oliver Jones, whose remarkable career spanned more than six decades and earned him international acclaim as one of the country’s finest musicians.
Jones died on Wednesday in Montreal at the age of 91, according to a statement released by his family and his longtime record label, Justin Time Records.
His family requested privacy as they mourn the loss of the renowned pianist, whose artistry helped shape Canada’s jazz landscape and inspired generations of musicians.
Born and raised in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood, Jones emerged from the same community that produced another Canadian jazz legend, Oscar Peterson.
As a young child, Jones studied piano under Daisy Peterson Sweeney, the respected music teacher and sister of Oscar Peterson, laying the foundation for a lifelong career of musical excellence.
Deeply rooted in classical piano training, Jones developed a distinctive style that effortlessly blended classical technique with jazz improvisation. Over the years, his musical journey expanded beyond jazz to include performances in pop, blues and other genres, showcasing his exceptional versatility.
His international career saw him perform on prestigious stages around the world and collaborate with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen, Herb Ellis, and Red Mitchell.
