Brampton Opens Candidate Nominations and Third-Party Registrations for 2026 Municipal Election

The City of Brampton has officially announced the start of candidate nominations and third-party advertiser registrations for the 2026 municipal election, with the process set to begin on May 1.

Residents interested in running for office will have until August 21, 2026, at 2 p.m. to file their nominations, while third-party advertisers can register until October 23, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. The election itself is scheduled to take place on October 26, 2026.

The city will accept nominations for key positions including Mayor, Regional Councillor, City Councillor and School Board Trustee across multiple boards such as the Peel District School Board, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Nominations for Conseil scolaire Viamonde trustees will be handled by the City of Mississauga.

Prospective candidates must file their nomination forms in person at Brampton City Hall, either directly or through an authorized agent. Appointments are required for submissions until August 20, while the final day will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates must also pay a filing fee — $200 for mayoral candidates and $100 for all other positions — and provide original identification confirming their name and qualifying address.

City officials emphasized that candidates are not permitted to raise or spend campaign funds until their nomination papers have been officially filed.

In addition to candidates, individuals, corporations or trade unions intending to promote or oppose candidates through advertising must register as third-party advertisers. These registrations must also be completed in person, with proper identification and, in the case of organizations, a formal authorization letter.

The city has made nomination forms, registration details and guidance materials available online through its Brampton Votes portal, where residents can also track the list of approved candidates and registered advertisers.

With more than 400,000 eligible voters expected to participate, the upcoming election represents a significant opportunity for residents to engage in shaping the future leadership of one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities.
