Peel Launches Free Text Message Program to Support Expecting and New Parents

BRAMPTON — Families in Peel Region now have access to a new digital support program designed to guide them through pregnancy and early parenthood with expert-backed advice delivered directly to their phones.

The Region of Peel has launched a one-year pilot project offering free text messages to pregnant individuals and new parents in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. The initiative will send up to three timely and evidence-based messages each week, covering everything from pregnancy health to infant care during the baby’s first year.

Officials say the goal is to provide simple, accessible and reliable information to help families navigate what can often be an overwhelming time.

“Pregnancy and early parenting can be overwhelming, and Peel families who subscribe to this service can feel confident that they are receiving trustworthy information for a healthy pregnancy and first year,” said Dr. Nicholas Brandon, Acting Medical Officer of Health for the Region of Peel.

The program is being delivered in partnership with SmartParent, a Canadian service developed by maternal and child health experts. The messages are tailored based on the stage of pregnancy or the baby’s age, ensuring parents receive relevant guidance when they need it most.

Health officials emphasize that the service is meant to complement — not replace — advice from healthcare providers. The messages also include links to additional resources and may help reduce infant injuries and unnecessary emergency visits by promoting preventive care and informed decision-making.

Nancy Polsinelli, Commissioner of Health Services for Peel Region, said the initiative reflects a strong commitment to community health and well-being by delivering evidence-based information directly to residents.

The SmartParent program is endorsed by leading national organizations including the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society, and is already available in other regions such as Halton, British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

Residents interested in enrolling can sign up by visiting the Region of Peel’s website or by texting “PEEL” to 12323.

The pilot program aims to strengthen support systems for families and ensure that every child in Peel has the healthiest possible start in life.
