Poilievre Pushes Back on Trump, Defends Oil and Signals Unity in Joe Rogan Interview

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre used his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience to address key political issues, including Canada-U.S. relations, economic policy, energy development and social debates, while also presenting himself as a unifying national figure on the international stage.

In a notable moment, Poilievre strongly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated suggestion that Canada could become the 51st state, saying Canada is “very proudly Canadian” and urging Trump to “knock that off.” He also criticized American tariffs on Canadian goods, arguing they hurt both economies and calling for a return to tariff-free trade to support industries such as auto, steel, aluminum and lumber.

Despite political differences at home, Poilievre struck a cooperative tone when speaking about Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying he respects the principle of “one prime minister at a time” and has been in communication with Carney during his U.S. visit. He emphasized that both leaders ultimately want what is best for Canada and avoided criticizing the prime minister while abroad.

The conversation also touched on sensitive social issues such as medical assistance in dying (MAID). While Poilievre reiterated that individuals should have personal choice, he maintained his opposition to expanding MAID eligibility to those suffering solely from mental illness, stressing the importance of promoting hope, mental health support and personal well-being.

On economic policy, Poilievre said his priority would be to accelerate development of Canada’s natural resources, including oil, gas, minerals and fertilizers. He dismissed many environmental criticisms of the oil sands, arguing that Canada has some of the most responsible extraction practices in the world and blaming delays on government bureaucracy rather than legitimate environmental concerns.

The interview also included lighter and controversial moments. Poilievre addressed his widely circulated “apple interview,” saying he was unaware he was being filmed at the time. He also pushed back against a conspiracy theory raised by host Joe Rogan regarding former prime minister Justin Trudeau, dismissing it outright.

Rogan appeared supportive throughout the discussion and even suggested that he would vote for Poilievre if he were Canadian, highlighting the broad reach and influence of the podcast, which has millions of listeners worldwide.

Overall, the interview allowed Poilievre to present his positions to a large international audience, combining criticism of U.S. policies, a call for economic growth through resource development and a measured tone on domestic political relationships, as Canada navigates a complex political and economic landscape.
