Toronto Police Officer Charged for Allegedly Accessing Databases Without Authorization

A member of the Toronto Police Service has been charged after allegedly accessing confidential police databases without proper authorization.

Police say Abbas Popal, a 25-year-old constable, accessed internal systems multiple times between January 2024 and April 2025.

He has been charged with unauthorized use of a computer.

Suspension and investigation details

Authorities confirmed that Popal, who has been with the force for about three years, has been suspended with pay in accordance with Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act.

The investigation determined that the alleged actions involved improper access to police databases, though officials have not disclosed further details about what information was accessed or why.

Not linked to larger corruption probe

Police emphasized that this case is not connected to Project South, a separate high-profile probe that resulted in charges against multiple officers and a retired member of the force.

Next court appearance

Popal is scheduled to appear in court in June as the case proceeds through the legal system.

The incident adds to ongoing scrutiny around data access, privacy and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
