Bus fares in Brampton are set to increase in 2026 as the city moves to stabilize transit service amid declining ridership and revenue.
Under the city’s proposed 2026 budget, Brampton Transit fares would rise by five per cent—the first increase since 2023. The change would bring the cash fare to about $4.72, up from $4.50. City staff say the increase aligns with inflation since the last fare adjustment in May 2023.
Officials reported that transit ridership dropped by 13 per cent in 2025, contributing to a significant revenue decline. Despite this, the city says all transit routes will be maintained in 2026, with efficiency-focused adjustments to better match service levels with demand.
The proposed city budget includes a 1.5 per cent municipal property tax increase, adding roughly $111 to the average residential bill. Brampton Transit is projected to post a $17.5 million operating deficit for 2025, driven largely by reduced fare revenue linked to federal immigration policy changes, economic pressures and housing market adjustments.
The city is also continuing its push to electrify transit, with a proposed capital budget of $142.9 million for Brampton Transit. Plans include refurbishing existing buses and purchasing 44 battery-electric buses for delivery in 2027–28.
Mayor Patrick Brown described transit as one of the most challenging areas of the 2026 budget during deliberations. Budget discussions are ongoing, with final approval still pending.
