Milos Raonic Announces Retirement, Saying ‘the Time Has Come’ to Step Away from Tennis

Canadian tennis standout Milos Raonic has announced his retirement from professional tennis, closing the chapter on a career that included a Wimbledon final appearance and a rise to the top tier of the sport.

Raonic, 35, made the announcement Sunday in an emotional post on social media. The former world No. 3 has not competed since mid-2024.

“The time has come, I am retiring from tennis,” Raonic wrote on Instagram. “This is a moment you know will come one day, but somehow you never feel ready for it. This is as ready as I ever will be. Tennis has been my love and obsession for most of my life.”

The Thornhill, Ont., native last competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he was eliminated in the first round by Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

At his peak, Raonic reached No. 3 in the Association of Tennis Professionals singles rankings. He won eight ATP Tour titles and made the final of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, where he lost in straight sets to Andy Murray.

Raonic reached at least the quarterfinals in 10 Grand Slam main draws and posted a 92-37 career record at major tournaments. Known for his powerful serve, he established himself as one of the most dominant servers of the Open Era and became a prominent ambassador for Canadian tennis on the global stage.

In his retirement message, Raonic reflected on the relationships he built throughout his career and hinted at future ambitions beyond the court.

“A big part of my tennis journey has been the incredible people I have been fortunate to meet all over the world,” he wrote. “What’s next? I won’t be slowing down. There is so much more life to live, and I am motivated and hungry as I was in 2011, when I broke through on tour.”

Injuries played a significant role in shortening Raonic’s career. A shoulder injury sustained in 2025 never fully healed, preventing a sustained comeback attempt.
