The Ontario government has revoked the licences of 66 driving schools across the province over the past several years, citing non-compliance with provincial standards and regulations.
According to an updated list released by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), the affected schools are no longer permitted to operate because they failed to meet government requirements. While the schools are spread across Ontario, a significant number were based in Toronto, Brampton, and Mississauga.
Many of the licence revocations are not recent. Some of the schools listed have been shut down for years, with closures dating back as far as 2007.
“The Ministry of Transportation regularly audits government-approved driving schools to make sure they comply with Ontario’s policies and regulations. We also review complaints made against specific schools and instructors,” the MTO states on its website. “Driving schools that do not comply with legislation or program guidelines are subject to sanctions. This may include the revocation of the driving school’s licence.”
The ministry has provided limited detail on the specific reasons for each closure. However, the revocations come amid ongoing concerns about questionable practices within parts of the driver training industry, particularly related to commercial and trucking licences. Some reports have alleged that certain schools operate primarily as cash-based businesses offering expedited or improper paths to licensing, raising concerns that drivers may be inadequately trained to operate large commercial vehicles.
The MTO has not indicated that any of the schools on its revoked list are directly linked to these allegations.
Demand for truck drivers remains high across the Greater Toronto Area due to the concentration of logistics and warehousing operations, adding to scrutiny of training standards within the sector.
The ministry has also warned prospective students to be cautious of fraudulent claims, including guarantees of a licence, promises of passing grades without road tests, or certification issued without completing mandatory training hours. Other concerns include falsified records showing course completion when required instruction was not fulfilled.
The MTO advises students to verify a school’s approval status through its official website before enrolling.
