Toyota RAV4 Tops Canada’s List of Most Stolen Vehicles as Auto Theft Costs Still Soar Past $1 Billion

Canada’s most stolen vehicles have been revealed once again — and the Toyota RAV4 has claimed the top spot, according to the Équité Association’s annual report released Tuesday.

Although auto theft across the country has decreased by 19 per cent, the organization says losses remain staggering, exceeding $1 billion a year in insurance claims. That figure reflects the financial and emotional toll borne by everyday Canadians.

Terri O’Brien, president and CEO of the Équité Association, said that while progress is being made, auto theft continues to be a major revenue stream for organized crime.

“Auto theft remains a national issue that has become a significant funding source for organized crime groups,” O’Brien said. “Despite an overall decrease, stolen vehicles still cost Canadians over $1 billion in losses each year.”

The second-most stolen vehicle last year was the Dodge Ram 1500, followed by the Honda CR-V. Newer keyless SUVs, particularly in Ontario and Quebec, continue to be top targets for sophisticated criminal networks.

Bryan Gast, the association’s national vice president of investigative services, said the placement of the RAV4 at the top of the list shows that thieves are shifting strategies rather than slowing down. He noted a rise in vehicles being re-VINed for resale or dismantled in illegal chop shops for parts — a trend expected to grow as vehicle costs rise.

Luxury vehicles have also become a hot commodity, with thefts of models valued at more than $200,000 jumping by 47.5 per cent. Gast said criminals are increasingly targeting high-end vehicles to maximize profits as law enforcement steps up pressure.

Most Stolen Vehicles in Canada (Latest Ranking):

  1. Toyota RAV4
  2. Dodge Ram 1500
  3. Honda CR-V

Despite the declines, officials warn that car theft remains a serious, evolving threat — and Canadians are still paying the price.
