“Let’s Fix It, Not Scrap It”: Councillor Santos Urges Premier Ford to Find Middle Ground on Speed Cameras

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos has issued a heartfelt final plea to Premier Doug Ford, urging him to work collaboratively with municipalities instead of dismantling Ontario’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program.

“Mr. Premier — I know you’re angry. So am I,” Santos said. “It’s wrong for some municipalities to issue tickets for going just a few kilometres over the limit— I want you to stop that. But it’s also wrong and dangerous for motorists to stunt drive, especially in school zones— I want you to stop that too. ASE works and the data proves it. Law-abiding residents want them around schools to keep their kids safe.”

Santos highlighted shocking examples of excessive speeding caught by Brampton’s ASE cameras, calling them unacceptable. “As a mom, I find this completely unacceptable. As a father, I know the Premier agrees with me,” she added.

Rather than scrapping ASE entirely, Santos said the province should refine the program through clear regulations that target true offenders. “There’s a reasonable middle ground,” she explained. “Brampton and many other municipalities have used this safety tool responsibly, setting sensible thresholds and focusing primarily on school zones. The Premier can ensure fairness by allowing cameras where safety matters most, setting limits that target stunt driving, and keeping fines reasonable yet effective.”

She pointed out that while Brampton uses speed bumps and roundabouts, ASE remains one of the most reliable ways to reduce speeding and protect residents.

“With the Legislature set to reconvene, I urge the Premier to meet with Mayor Patrick Brown and other municipal leaders before making a final decision,” Santos concluded. “Brampton is close to getting this right. Let’s not abandon what works — let’s fix it together.”
