Carney Government to Unveil Tougher Border Security Plan in Niagara

The federal Liberal government is set to reveal a new package of border security measures today, as Prime Minister Mark Carney visits a key crossing point in the Niagara region. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is expected to provide further details at a news conference shortly after the tour.

Earlier this month, the government split its border security legislation into two parts — a strategic move to fast-track widely supported measures while allowing more time for debate on controversial provisions.

The new bill reintroduces several elements from previous legislation, including an expanded role for the coast guard, tighter rules for the immigration and refugee system, enhanced information sharing on sex offenders, and stricter controls on precursor chemicals used to manufacture illicit drugs.

At the same time, Ottawa is pressing ahead with the more contentious sections of the original proposal, which would grant authorities new powers to access personal information and inspect mail. These provisions have drawn strong criticism from civil society groups concerned about privacy and civil liberties.

Carney’s appearance at the Niagara border facility underscores the government’s push to frame the legislation as both a national security measure and a public safety priority. Further details on timelines and implementation are expected to be announced during today’s events.
