Carney Hails Hostage Release as ‘Moment of Profound Relief’ Amid Landmark Gaza Peace Deal

Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling the release of the final hostages held by Hamas under a new Gaza ceasefire agreement “a moment of profound relief,” as world leaders gather in Egypt to endorse a landmark Middle East peace plan. Carney travelled to Egypt on Sunday to participate in the signing ceremony alongside U.S. President Donald Trump and other international leaders, marking a pivotal step in efforts to end more than two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In a statement released Monday morning, Carney praised Trump’s leadership in advancing the deal and urged all parties to fully implement its terms. The agreement includes the establishment of a transitional governance structure for Gaza and outlines a roadmap toward a lasting political solution aimed at enabling Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. The summit, dubbed the “Summit for Peace,” coincided with the release of the 20 remaining Israeli hostages, a development that has been met with relief and cautious optimism around the world.

Carney reiterated Canada’s support for diplomatic efforts that bring stability and security to the region and emphasized the importance of sustained international cooperation to ensure the ceasefire endures. The release of the hostages and the signing of the peace plan are being viewed as the most significant steps toward resolving the conflict since it began in October 2023.
