A high school football celebration north of Brampton took a chaotic turn last Friday evening after pepper spray was released in a crowd at Humberview Secondary School in Caledon, leading to the event being shut down.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incident, described as “a significant disturbance,” occurred during the school’s Friday Night Lights football game, which was part of festivities marking Humberview’s 50th anniversary.
Police officers already on site were alerted to a large gathering involving students, when pepper spray was reportedly set off among the crowd, triggering confusion and a physical altercation. Emergency services responded swiftly. Paramedics treated two individuals affected by the pepper spray, and one youth was transported to hospital with injuries sustained during the altercation.
As the situation escalated, additional officers were called to the scene to assist. Police received multiple reports of weapons and further confrontations both inside and around the school grounds. During the response, one youth was found carrying a knife. Although detained, police later confirmed the youth was not involved in the main fracas and was subsequently released.
In consultation with school officials, the event was cancelled for safety reasons, given the growing number of attendees and the developing situation. Officers remained on site, conducting patrols until the area was fully cleared and all injured individuals had been assessed by EMS.
The OPP has confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, in close cooperation with school staff. Authorities are appealing to anyone who may have been a victim, witnessed the incident, or captured photos or videos to come forward.
