NDP Leadership Race to Launch in September, New Leader to Be Named by March 2026

The federal NDP will officially begin its leadership race in September as the party moves to replace outgoing leader Jagmeet Singh. According to rules approved by the party’s national council, the race will span six months, culminating no later than March 29, 2026, during the party’s national convention in Winnipeg.

Leadership hopefuls will need to pay a $100,000 entry fee, a requirement designed to demonstrate their fundraising ability and organizational strength. The high-stakes contest follows Singh’s resignation after a disappointing election on April 28, when the NDP was reduced to just seven seats in the House of Commons and Singh lost his own riding.

Until a new leader is elected, B.C. Member of Parliament Don Davies is serving as the interim leader. The Canadian Press has confirmed the leadership timeline and details with three individuals familiar with the internal process.
