In a nail-biting and historic race, 23-year-old Amandeep Sodhi has been elected as the Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre, becoming not only the youngest MP from the riding, but also one of the youngest elected officials in Canada’s 2025 Parliament. Representing the Liberal Party of Canada, Sodhi narrowly defeated Conservative candidate Taran Chahal in one of the tightest contests in the region.
With all 183 polls reporting, Elections Canada confirmed that Sodhi received 18,940 votes (48%), just ahead of Chahal’s 18,600 votes (47.2%). The final result was not declared until Tuesday morning, with both campaigns anxiously awaiting the outcome of the final poll count.
“This win is a testament to the power of young people in politics,” Sodhi said in her victory speech. “At 23, I’m honoured to be the voice of a riding as dynamic and diverse as Brampton Centre. I will bring energy, transparency, and a deep commitment to community to Ottawa.”

Speaking about what inspired her political journey, Sodhi shared:
“I joined the Liberal Party because I believe in a Canada where compassion, inclusion, and opportunity define our future. The Liberal vision aligns with the values I grew up with—fairness, respect, and support for every individual regardless of background.”
On why she chose to run in Brampton Centre, she added:
“Brampton Centre is home. It’s where I was raised, where my community shaped me. I’ve seen the challenges families face, from affordability to youth employment. I wanted to be part of the solution—and ensure this riding has a strong, local voice that truly understands its needs.”
Looking ahead, Sodhi says her focus will be on being an accessible and responsive MP:
“My priority is to work closely with residents, small businesses, and community organizations to build a healthier, more affordable, and more connected Brampton Centre. I want every young person to feel heard, and every senior to feel supported. Together, we can shape a brighter future.”
Sodhi’s campaign focused on affordability, accessible healthcare, support for small businesses, and climate action. Her strong grassroots presence, combined with her message of youth empowerment and inclusive leadership, resonated across the riding—particularly with first-time voters and young families.
The New Democratic Party’s Anil Boodhai finished a distant third with 1,056 votes (2.7%), followed by Green Party candidate Ray Shaver with 451 votes (1.1%) and Simmi Hundal of the People’s Party of Canada with less than 1%.
This victory strengthens the Liberal hold on Brampton, with the party securing four out of six ridings citywide. Among those celebrating Sodhi’s win are local residents, youth leaders, and community advocates who rallied behind a new generation of leadership.
Amandeep Sodhi’s entry into Parliament marks a significant generational shift and sends a powerful message that youth leadership is not only welcome—but essential—in shaping Canada’s future.
