From Brampton to Portugal: Local Leaders Unite to Strengthen Trade Amid Global Shifts

In a timely and collaborative meeting, Regional Councillor Paul Vicente welcomed a distinguished delegation from Lourinhã, Portugal this week at Brampton City Hall, as both municipalities explored new trade opportunities and diplomatic ties amid a changing global economy.

The delegation included Mayor João Duarte and President of the Municipal Assembly Brian Costa da Silva, along with representatives from ADAPECIL, an organization that provides vital support for individuals with special needs in Lourinhã. The group is currently raising funds to sustain and expand its services.

Joining the discussion were Wilson Teixeira, Co-Founder of the Portugal-Canada Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mark Medeiros, Chief Budget Officer for the City of Brampton. Together, participants engaged in dialogue around international trade, local economic development, and how municipalities can work together in response to current disruptions—particularly tariff volatility introduced by the U.S. administration.

“Our discussions touched on a wide range of topics of interest to both our municipalities,” said Councillor Vicente, who represents Wards 1 & 5. “As we navigate through this new era of tariffs brought on by the American administration, I’m confident that Canada and Portugal can strengthen business partnerships and create new pathways for mutual growth.”

The meeting also served as a platform to exchange best practices in community services, economic planning, and inclusive development, with both cities expressing interest in formalizing ties for future collaboration.

Lourinhã is one of only three regions in Europe officially recognized to produce brandy, standing alongside Cognac and Armagnac in prestige. This distinction adds to the region’s export potential and was a point of pride during the visit.

This visit marks a significant step in fostering international municipal cooperation and reflects Brampton’s ongoing commitment to cultivating global partnerships that deliver local benefits.
