University of Toronto, McGill, and UBC Among World’s Top 50 Universities: QS Rankings

Canada continues to make its mark in global education, with three of its universities ranking among the top 50 in the world, according to the newly released 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Published by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the rankings compare over 21,000 academic programs across more than 1,700 institutions in 100 countries and territories. The 15th edition of the study spans 55 academic subjects and five faculty areas.

Canadian universities scored high in engineering and biological sciences, with the University of Toronto emerging as a global leader—earning top-50 placements in an impressive 46 subject areas. U of T ranked 25th overall, with a score of 84.1.

Close behind, McGill University claimed the 29th spot with a score of 83, while the University of British Columbia ranked 38th, scoring 81.

The rankings are based on multiple performance indicators, including research output, learning experience, employability of graduates, global engagement, and sustainability initiatives.

Despite the strong showing, QS vice president Ben Sowter acknowledged the financial pressures facing higher education institutions in mature markets. “With growing funding challenges in mature higher education systems, supporting the sector is critical to driving innovation and societal progress,” said Sowter. He noted a trend where institutions in Asia and the Middle East are on the rise as Western universities face increasing financial strain.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its top spot, followed by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford.

Other Canadian universities making the top 200 include:

  • University of Alberta (96)
  • University of Waterloo (115)
  • Western University (120)
  • Université de Montréal (159)
  • McMaster University (176)
  • University of Ottawa (189)
  • Queen’s University at Kingston (193)
  • University of Calgary (198)

These rankings reaffirm Canada’s position as a hub for world-class education and academic excellence on the global stage.
