Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a firm response to U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that bilateral trade talks will not proceed until the U.S. administration halts its “disrespectful” rhetoric toward Canada.
Speaking from London during his diplomatic visit to France and the U.K., Carney emphasized that Canada is ready to engage in meaningful discussions on trade and security, but Trump’s provocative remarks about annexing Canada are a roadblock to constructive dialogue.
“We want to have a more comprehensive discussion with the Trump administration about our commercial and security relationship. However, until these inflammatory comments stop, that conversation simply will not happen,” Carney stated.
Carney’s remarks come amid a growing trade war between Canada and the U.S., triggered by Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and continued verbal attacks on Canadian sovereignty.
The U.S. president has repeatedly suggested that Canada should become the ‘51st state’, remarks that have been met with strong pushback from Canadian leaders and the public.
Carney’s visit to France and the U.K. marks his first international trip since taking office. He has used the opportunity to reinforce Canada’s trade and security ties with European allies, signaling a shift in focus toward stronger economic partnerships outside of the U.S.
The prime minister’s stance reflects Canada’s commitment to standing firm against political and economic pressure while prioritizing diplomatic and trade relationships with nations that respect its sovereignty.
