Brampton Pioneers Advanced Technology to Boost Public Safety

The City of Brampton is taking bold steps to strengthen community safety with the installation of cutting-edge 360-degree cameras and licence plate recognition systems at 50 traffic intersections. This forward-thinking project will equip Peel Regional Police and other law enforcement agencies with powerful tools to tackle crime and enhance security across the city.

The new cameras will feed real-time video into a sophisticated software platform, delivering police critical information such as:

  • Date and time of incidents
  • Licence plate details
  • Vehicle specifics, including make, model, and color

This technology acts as a vital resource for crime prevention and investigation, empowering Peel Regional Police to address traffic-related offenses and safety issues more effectively. Currently, 19 intersections are fitted with 360-degree cameras, with the remaining installations in progress and expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Unlike traditional traffic cameras, these systems will not issue fines. Instead, their sole purpose is to bolster public safety by aiding law enforcement in probes related to crimes, traffic incidents, and other concerns.

The City has partnered with Genetec Inc., a Canadian security technology leader, to provide the video management and licence plate recognition systems, while Axis Communications, a Swedish firm renowned for its camera innovations, supplies the 360-degree cameras.

Brampton’s investment reflects its dedication to equipping law enforcement with top-tier resources, responding directly to residents’ concerns voiced during the 2025 budget process, where community safety emerged as the top priority. By leveraging advanced technology, the City aims to make Brampton the safest place in Canada to live.

As the first Canadian municipality to deploy this technology on such a scale, Brampton is setting a national precedent. This initiative underscores the City’s commitment to using innovation to improve residents’ quality of life. Learn more at brampton.ca/roadsafety.
