Public Outcry Erupts as Chandigarh’s ( India) Iconic Rock Garden Faces Demolition

The iconic Rock Garden of Chandigarh, renowned for its innovative use of recycled materials by the late Nek Chand, is now under threat as portions of this celebrated heritage site are being demolished for a road-widening project. The initiative, aimed at creating additional parking space near the High Court, has already led to the destruction of part of the garden’s wall, igniting a wave of public anger and concern.

Nek Chand’s legacy holds deep emotional and cultural significance for the people of Chandigarh. His son, Anuj Saini, has voiced profound concern over the irreversible damage being inflicted on his father’s creative masterpiece. Heritage conservationists have also condemned the move, arguing that demolishing parts of the Rock Garden compromises both the city’s environmental and historical integrity.

In response to the ongoing demolition, concerned citizens have organized a protest set for 3:00 PM on Sunday at the Rock Garden (High Court parking side). Protesters are urging authorities to reconsider the project and to take immediate steps to preserve this unique cultural landmark.

Senior lawyer Manmohan Lal Sarin, popularly known as Mac Sarin, expressed his dismay on social media, stating:

“So sorry, Nek Chand Saini, your precious creation is being demolished in parts to make way for a road and parking of polluting vehicles. We, the people of Chandigarh and the Administration, have let you down, that too in your birth centenary year. I have tears in my eyes.”

At this juncture, the UT administration has not provided detailed comments on the demolition, leaving the local community and heritage experts to worry about the long-term impact on Chandigarh’s cultural landscape. The Rock Garden, a symbol of creativity and sustainable art, remains a cherished asset whose loss would be felt deeply by residents and art enthusiasts alike.
