Peel Police Continue Investigation into Circumstances Surrounding Infant’s Death
BRAMPTON – Peel Regional Police have charged a 23-year-old woman after a newborn infant was found deceased inside a Brampton residence on Sunday evening, prompting an ongoing investigation by the force’s Special Victims Unit.
Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 8:20 p.m. on May 31 at a residence in the area of Kennedy Road North and Williams Parkway after family members reportedly discovered the remains of an infant inside the home.
Upon arrival, first responders confirmed the presence of a deceased newborn child.
Investigators later located and arrested the infant’s mother at a local hospital where she had sought medical treatment following the birth. She has been charged with concealing the body of a child after birth.
During a media briefing on Monday, Peel Regional Police Constable Tyler Bell-Morena said the investigation remains in its earliest stages and many important questions remain unanswered.
“First responders attended a residence after receiving information that the remains of an infant had been discovered. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the presence of a deceased newborn. At this stage, investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s death,” Bell-Morena said.
Police have not disclosed the gender of the infant and are awaiting further forensic examinations to determine whether the child was born alive or deceased.
“We are not entirely certain of the sequence of events at this time,” Bell-Morena explained. “An important aspect of this investigation is determining whether the infant was born alive or was deceased at the time of birth. These are critical facts that investigators and medical experts are working to establish.”
Investigators believe the woman sought medical attention shortly after the birth while the infant remained at the residence. The circumstances leading to the discovery of the child are now being carefully reviewed by police.
Authorities also indicated they are examining whether any other individuals may have been involved or possess information relevant to the investigation.
Police acknowledged the sensitive nature of the case and emphasized that consideration is being given to all possible circumstances, including situations where pregnancies may not be known to family members or others living within a household.
The residence remained under police control on Monday as forensic officers continued gathering evidence.
Constable Bell-Morena noted that incidents involving infants are particularly distressing for families, communities and emergency responders alike, and emphasized that support resources are being made available to those affected.
The investigation is being led by Peel Regional Police’s Special Victims Unit in consultation with forensic specialists and medical authorities.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Police have indicated that additional information will be released as the investigation progresses and more facts become available.
As the matter remains before investigators, no further details regarding the woman involved or the infant’s cause of death have been released.
