Mississauga Twins Triumph in International Jewish Knowledge Competition

Twin brothers Daniel and David Marquez from Mississauga have secured top honors at this year’s International JewQ Torah Championship held in Stamford, Connecticut. Competing against 4,000 children from 25 countries, the 8-year-old scholars showcased their profound understanding of Jewish traditions, history, and values, each winning significant awards in their age group.

On April 7, the Grade 3 students from Sheridan Park Public School, accompanied by their parents, participated in the competition, which attracted a record number of participants from nations including the United Kingdom, Columbia, France, Australia, and Argentina. Daniel Marquez clinched the highest prize for his level, bringing home the championship trophy, while his brother, David, won the gold medal.

The championship, akin to a spelling bee but focused on Jewish knowledge, not only tested the participants’ intellect but also included various other activities and outings. “We had fun,” remarked David, expressing their joy at both the competitive and recreational aspects of the event.

Remarkably, the brothers began their formal Jewish education just last September at the Miriam Robbins Chabad Hebrew School in Mississauga, following their enjoyable experience at Chabad’s Summer Day Camp. Their swift rise in Jewish learning led them to this prestigious international platform, a testament to their dedication and the support of their educators.

“Their achievements represent a beacon of light for our community and are a proud moment for all of us,” stated Rabbi Yitzchak Slavin, co-director of Chabad of Mississauga-Oakville.

Originally from Argentina and Peru, the Marquez family moved to Mississauga over a decade ago. The diverse heritage of the family underscores the inclusive community spirit fostered by the Chabad House, where the boys decided to continue their studies after summer camp.

Sara Slavin, director of the Miriam Robbins Chabad Hebrew School, highlighted, “These victories are for the entire community. They remind us of the power of education and its profound impact on our children and that, despite challenges, our traditions and values will continue to thrive.”
