Long-time Pickering mayor and provincial parliamentarian, Wayne Arthurs, shares insights into his serene post-political life and looks forward to upcoming city honors. Having retired from his dynamic political career 13 years ago, Arthurs now enjoys a peaceful life, marked by leisurely travels and quality family time.
Wayne Arthurs, along with the late John E. (Jack) Anderson, former mayor, will be commemorated by the City of Pickering through the naming of city properties in their honor. This tribute is scheduled for the third quarter of 2024, recognizing their substantial contributions to the community.
Arthurs, who first entered politics in 1982 and was elected mayor in 1988, played a pivotal role in transitioning Pickering from a town to a city. His tenure saw significant developments such as the growth of the Seaton community and enhancements in city services and amenities. After serving 15 years as mayor, Arthurs continued his commitment to public service at Queen’s Park, representing Pickering-Ajax and later Pickering-Scarborough-East as a Liberal MPP until his retirement in 2011.
John E. (Jack) Anderson, who served as mayor from 1977 until his retirement in 1988, was instrumental in Pickering’s suburban development and oversaw projects like the Pickering Recreation Complex and the Civic Complex. Anderson passed away three years ago at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and community development.
Reflecting on his retirement, Wayne Arthurs expresses contentment with his current life, which allows for winters spent in warmer climates and summers at the family cottage. “It’s a good life, a really good life,” remarks Arthurs, echoing the sentiments of the late Gord Downie’s lyrics.
As the city prepares to honor these former mayors, Arthurs fondly recalls the challenges and triumphs of his political career and appreciates the planned recognitions as a testament to the lasting impacts of their leadership on the community.
