The City of Mississauga is preparing to pay tribute to one of its own by renaming a local park in honour of Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto, the veteran officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty while serving the community he had dedicated nearly two decades to protecting.
Mississauga City Council is scheduled to hold a special meeting to consider renaming Indian Gate Park in the Lorne Park neighbourhood as Constable Marc Pinizzotto Park. The proposed tribute would create a lasting memorial to a respected officer, devoted family man, and proud Mississauga native whose life was cut short while carrying out his duties as a member of the Toronto Police Service.
Constable Pinizzotto, 43, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of June 11 while participating in the execution of a search warrant in North York. The operation, conducted by members of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force, was connected to an investigation involving a series of shootings across the Greater Toronto Area. During the operation, Pinizzotto was struck by gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries.
A dedicated member of the Emergency Task Force for the past five years, Pinizzotto served the Toronto Police Service for a total of 18 years. Colleagues described him as a highly respected officer whose professionalism, courage, and commitment to public safety earned the admiration of those who worked alongside him.
Born and raised in Mississauga, Pinizzotto was known not only for his policing career but also for his accomplishments as an elite hockey player during his youth. Friends and community members remember him as a humble and hardworking individual who never forgot his roots and remained committed to serving others.
Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish expressed the city’s deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the proposed park renaming would ensure that his contributions and sacrifice are remembered by future generations. The park selected for the tribute is located near the area where Pinizzotto spent much of his childhood, adding a deeply personal significance to the memorial.
Ward 2 Councillor Alvin Tedjo, whose ward includes the Lorne Park community, described the officer’s death as devastating and extended condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those affected by the tragedy.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw paid tribute to the fallen officer, describing him as “a hero in life, not death.” He emphasized that the loss has profoundly affected the entire Toronto Police Service and promised continued support for Pinizzotto’s family and fellow officers during this difficult time.
Constable Pinizzotto leaves behind his wife and two children. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from police services, community organizations, elected officials, and residents across Ontario.
Police have charged a 19-year-old Toronto man with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. The accused remains in hospital after sustaining injuries during the incident.
The tragedy occurred only days after another Ontario police officer from the Peel Region, OPP Constable Tarun Bali of Brampton, was also killed while on duty. The back-to-back losses have deeply impacted law enforcement communities across the province and highlighted the risks faced daily by officers who serve and protect the public.
If approved by council, the renaming of the park will stand as a permanent tribute to Constable Marc Pinizzotto’s courage, dedication, and service. It will serve as a reminder that behind every badge is a person committed to safeguarding their community, often at great personal risk.
As Mississauga prepares to honour one of its fallen sons, the city joins countless others in remembering a police officer whose legacy will be defined not by the way he died, but by the way he lived — with courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to others.
May Constable Marc Pinizzotto’s service and sacrifice never be forgotten.
