Justin Trudeau’s choice of footwear stole the spotlight during King Charles’ speech from the throne, igniting a flurry of reactions over what some viewed as a royal fashion misstep.
Dressed sharply in a monochromatic blue suit, shirt, and tie combo, Canada’s former prime minister made an unexpected style statement by pairing his outfit with green Adidas Gazelle sneakers. His colorful kicks were on full display as he sat near King Charles and Queen Camilla during the ceremonial opening of Parliament in Ottawa.
The King, adorned in a classic dark striped suit and medals, and the Queen, elegant in navy silk and a Philip Treacy hat, embodied traditional royal style. Trudeau’s casual footwear, however, drew a sharp contrast — and even sharper opinions online.
Reactions on social media ranged from disapproval to admiration. One user branded the look as lacking class, while another praised it for bringing “style and comfort to the Senate.” The sneakers, described online as “collegiate green” suede with “preloved red” stripes, retail for about $100.
Etiquette expert Susy Fossati weighed in, saying that even in a non-political role, Trudeau remains a public figure expected to uphold formal standards at state occasions. “If you’re going to wear sneakers, at least wear black,” Fossati noted. “The green made sure everyone noticed. It’s no wonder people are reading into it.”
A comment request to Trudeau’s representatives went unanswered, but his flair for bold fashion choices is nothing new. From novelty socks in Parliament to the opulent traditional attire worn during his 2018 trip to India, Trudeau has long mixed personal style with public appearances.
Still, Fossati believes the nature of the event — with royalty, former governors general, and political dignitaries in attendance — called for a more conventional look. “He’s still a symbol, whether in office or not,” she said. “And symbols speak loudly, especially in suede sneakers.”
