Cost-of-Living Concerns Put Republican Control of Congress at Risk, Analyst Says

November 3, 2026 — Affordability concerns could deliver significant losses for Republicans in Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake, according to elections analyst David Wasserman.

Speaking on CTV’s Your Morning, Wasserman, of The Cook Political Report, said dissatisfaction with the economy has created favourable conditions for Democrats. Voters who expected President Donald Trump to improve their financial circumstances are feeling disappointed, he said.

Americans are voting in contests for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Republicans entered Election Day holding majorities in both chambers.

Wasserman predicted a strong Democratic showing in the House, while describing the Senate contest as more competitive. He identified Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, Texas and Kansas as states where Democratic gains could determine the balance of power.

According to his assessment, Democrats hold 47 Senate seats and need four additional seats to secure a majority. He described North Carolina as a likely Democratic pickup, saying Republicans had stopped spending there. Victories in three additional competitive races would provide a route to Senate control.

Wasserman said Republicans have lost support among independents, blue-collar workers and Hispanic voters. Their candidates face the difficult task of energizing Trump’s strongest supporters while also attracting voters dissatisfied with his performance.

A Democratic takeover of either chamber would make it harder for Trump to advance legislation during the final two years of his presidency.

Wasserman also addressed the possibility of disputes over the results. He suggested Trump could pressure Republicans over certification or seek federal monitoring of vote counts, but said courts have repeatedly rejected his previous election challenges.

His comments represent an Election Day forecast; the outcome will depend on the ballots cast and counted.
