Golf Gains Momentum: Winnipeg Hits 107K Rounds in 2024, GTA Surpasses 3 Million

Golf remains a popular and profitable pastime in Winnipeg and beyond
Winnipeg’s city-run golf courses are thriving, with over 107,000 rounds of golf played during the 192-day season in 2024, according to a report presented to the city’s property and development committee. This local success mirrors a broader trend, as golf participation surges nationwide. In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), an impressive 3.2 million rounds of golf were played across both municipal and privately run courses in 2024.

“Golf has been in a healthy position for several consecutive years,” said Ben Fey, general manager of Golf Services for Winnipeg. “2024 is no exception, and the trend looks set to continue.

The popularity of golf in Winnipeg and across Canada has surged in recent years. Between 2010 and 2019, Winnipeg’s city-run courses averaged 79,825 rounds annually. This figure has jumped 29%, with an average of 103,225 rounds played between 2020 and 2024. Fey attributes this growth to the pandemic, which gave the sport a major boost.

“The pandemic certainly provided a jolt to the golf industry,” he said. “There was a real boom during those two years, and significant tailwinds have continued into subsequent seasons.”

Fey also highlighted a shift in the public perception of golf. Once considered a niche sport, it is now seen as a “cool” activity that promotes both physical and mental wellness.

With participation levels remaining high and steady demand, city-run courses are projected to continue thriving in 2025 and beyond. “Assuming normal weather and continued participation levels, we expect city-run golf courses to remain profitable for years to come,” Fey said.

Rates will see a modest increase in 2025, with the price per round going up by $1. Despite this, Fey emphasizes the accessibility and affordability of city courses.

For those considering taking up the sport or continuing to play, Fey encourages everyone to visit Winnipeg’s city-run golf courses in 2025.

“Our courses are affordable and accessible,” Fey said. “We welcome golfers of all skill levels. With club rentals available, you don’t need to be a seasoned scratch golfer to enjoy a round. It’s a great way to spend time with family and friends outdoors while learning and enjoying the game.”

With over 107,000 rounds already in the books for 2024 in Winnipeg and millions more played across Canada, including the GTA’s staggering 3.2 million rounds, the future of golf in the country looks brighter than ever.
